India and Italy have decided to move ahead with building a defence industrial framework focused on the co-production of military hardware. The decision comes at a time when both countries are dealing with a changing global security environment, including the ongoing crisis in West Asia. The move signals a stronger push towards deeper defence cooperation and long-term strategic alignment between the two nations.
The agreement was reached during a meeting between Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and his Italian counterpart Guido Crosetto in New Delhi. Both leaders held detailed discussions on expanding defence ties and addressing key regional and global issues. Their talks reflected a shared interest in strengthening cooperation in defence production and security.
After the meeting, both sides announced a bilateral military cooperation plan for 2026–27. This plan will guide future engagements between the armed forces of India and Italy. It aims to improve coordination and build stronger connections between the two militaries through structured activities and exchanges.
"We discussed a wide range of regional and global issues, including the current situation in West Asia," Singh said on social media. His statement underlined the importance of the talks in the context of current global challenges. He also pointed to the need for closer coordination between like-minded countries in uncertain times.
"We also discussed the avenues to further develop mutually beneficial defence industrial cooperation under India's Atmanirbhar Bharat programme and Italy's defence cooperation initiative," he added. This highlights the focus on boosting domestic defence production while also building international partnerships that support technology sharing and joint development.
According to the defence ministry, both Singh and Crosetto reaffirmed that the India-Italy strategic partnership is built on shared values such as peace, stability, freedom, and mutual respect. These common principles form the foundation of their growing cooperation across sectors, especially in defence and security.
The ministry also noted that both countries share similar views on key maritime issues. It highlighted cooperation in information sharing through the Information Fusion Center-Indian Ocean Region in Gurugram. This platform plays an important role in enhancing maritime awareness and coordination, especially in the Indian Ocean region where both nations have strategic interests.
Before the formal discussions, Crosetto paid tribute at the National War Memorial. He laid a wreath to honour soldiers who lost their lives in service to the nation. The gesture reflected respect for India’s armed forces and their sacrifices. He also inspected the tri-service Guard of Honour, marking the ceremonial welcome extended to visiting defence leaders.
Beyond the current agreement, India and Italy have been working to expand their defence ties under a broader framework. Both sides are focusing on increasing cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region. The aim is to improve interoperability between their forces and strengthen joint responses to emerging security challenges in the region.
Efforts are also being made to deepen partnerships between public and private stakeholders from both countries. Discussions have focused on technology collaboration, co-production, and co-development of defence equipment and platforms. These initiatives are expected to open new opportunities for industry players and support innovation in defence manufacturing.
The decision to develop a co-production framework marks a significant step in India-Italy relations. It reflects a shift towards more practical and result-oriented cooperation in defence. As global security dynamics continue to evolve, such partnerships are likely to play a key role in ensuring stability and preparedness.
