During Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Guyana, India and Guyana signed 10 agreements (MoUs) to work together in areas like agriculture, medicines, and introducing UPI (Unified Payments Interface) in Guyana.
Among the major accords is a Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation in the Hydrocarbons Sector, which focusses on cooperative efforts in infrastructure development, natural gas cooperation, and crude sourcing. Additionally, the collaboration seeks to improve knowledge exchange and capacity building throughout the hydrocarbon value chain. According to a Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) press release, an MoU on Bilateral Cooperation in Agriculture and Allied Sectors aims to promote cooperative efforts and the sharing of knowledge and scientific resources to promote agricultural development.
A Cultural Exchange Program (2024–2027) was signed with the goal of celebrating and conserving cultural heritage, with a focus on collaboration in the fields of theatre, music, fine arts, literature, libraries, and museums. Significant progress was also made in the health sector, as seen by agreements such as an MoU on the Recognition of Indian Pharmacopoeia Regulation to enhance pharmaceutical regulation and another to execute the Janaushadhi Scheme (PMBJP) to provide CARICOM countries with affordable medications. In the medical and pharmaceutical industries, a separate Memorandum of Understanding was formed to control biological products, medical devices, raw materials, and cosmetics, establishing a strong foundation for communication between the two countries.
India and Guyana have signed important agreements to boost digital transformation. The INDIA STACK agreement focuses on working together through training, capacity building, and pilot projects. Additionally, NPCI International Payments Ltd has partnered with Guyana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs to introduce a UPI-like real-time payment system, making digital transactions faster and more efficient in the region. An agreement was made between Prasar Bharati and Guyana’s National Communications Network to exchange programs in culture, education, science, and sports. Also, a memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed between Guyana’s National Defence Institute and India’s Rashtriya Raksha University to improve education, research and training in national security and defence studies.
