In a comprehensive interview given to journalist Smita Prakash on ANI, Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid forth his agenda for the 2019 Elections. It ranged from talking about the economic situation in India, demonetization, Ram Mandir, GST and a variety of other issues. He also spoke on the issues that have dominated the news lately on the cultural front- namely the Sabarimala issue and the Triple Talaq Bill.
On National Security Issues, PM Modi talked the surgical strikes and emotionally described what was said to the officers and how they should come before sunrise. He also spoke about the Doklam standoff and why he believed India should be judged by the response it gave.
On the economic front he strongly rebutted Rahul Gandhi’s charge on GST as well as gave his perspective on Demonetisation. He specifically said the DeMo was not a jhatka and it should not be perceived as that.
Politically he also talked about the Congress and allies coming together in a Mahagathbandan and also explained why this would not work. On the assembly elections he primarily seemed to say that the anti-incumbency at the state level was a major factor. He also talked about the Christan Michel extradition.
The section however that was the most discussed was the one on social issues where he talked about Triple Talaq, Sabarimala and Ram Mandir. He made a clear distinction and addressed the false comparison made by the left liberals on Triple Talaq and Sabarimala. He mentioned how one was a temple specific tradition and the other dealt with issues of gender equality among other things.
Another major discussion topic was the Ram Mandir ordinance where he said that an ordinance would only be considered after the judicial process was over and within the ambit of the constitution.
Overall it was a detailed interview which outlined the PM’s position on all major issues dominating the Indian polity. He has set the ball rolling on the 2019 Elections, now how the opposition responds to it remains to be seen.
