A key strategic initiative, the India Middle East Europe Economic Corridor (IMEEC) project aims to facilitate the transportation of goods from Indian ports to Fujairah, UAE, via sea routes. The project aims to facilitate the transportation of goods from Indian ports to Fujairah in the UAE via sea routes, followed by the transfer of containers by rail to Haifa, Israel. Subsequently, these containers will be further routed to Europe, with countries such as Italy, France, the UK, and the US already having joined this alliance. Notably, those ports in Greece and North Africa could potentially witness increased traffic as a result of this initiative.
During a recent address from the Oval Office, US President Joe Biden underscored the critical importance of the IMEEC project for the region.
"The United States and our partners across the region are working to build a better future for the Middle East. One where the Middle East is more stable, and better connected to its neighbours, and through innovative projects like India, Middle East, and Europe rail corridor that I announced this year at the summit of the world's biggest economies, more predictable markets, more employment, less rage, fewer grievances, less war when connected. It benefits the people. It would benefit the people of the Middle East, and it would benefit us," he had said.
The crucial aspect of this strategy involves ensuring seamless and efficient movement, along with the implementation of standardized equipment at all Indian ports and railway yards. This standardization extends to the participating countries in the project, including the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, and Israel. The goal is to enable containers sealed in India to be transported directly without the need for them to be opened in any other country along the route.
"We will step up our investment in improving connectivity to the eight ports so that we can reach these ports within 36 hours from any part of the country and quickly ship our goods to West Asia and Europe, using the IMEEC," railway minister Ashwini Vaishnaw told TOI.
The Rs 3.5 lakh crore investment encompasses a range of projects, some of which are currently in progress, while others have received recent approvals, including the Rs 4,500 crore Son Nagar-Andal link upgrade. Central to the plan are the dedicated freight corridors, which are expected to play a pivotal role in expediting the movement of goods.
Although concerns have been expressed regarding the project's advancement in the wake of tensions in West Asia, the government has consistently asserted that there will be no adverse impact on its progress.
FM Nirmala Sitharaman had stated, "The IMEEC, which is an India initiative, is for the long term and its significance is long term. While short-term glitches can cause concerns and occupy our minds, we will keep engaging with all stakeholders. This is just not for the immediate future, we have started it with a long-term interest."
