Mohammad Shariful Islam Shehzad, a suspected Bangladeshi immigrant in the stabbing case of Saif Ali Khan, was taken into custody by Mumbai Police on January 19. Media reports state that the accused confessed to breaking into the actor's Bandra West home early on January 16 and carried out the attack, leading to his arrest in Thane. The accused entered India illegally and assumed a false Hindu identity, according to a statement released by Mumbai Police.
In a conversation with the media on Sunday, DCP Zone 9 Dixit Gedam said, “On 16th January, at 2 am, actor Saif Ali Khan was attacked at his residence. FIR was registered and one accused has been arrested. His name is Mohammad Shariful Islam Shehzad, he is 30 years old. He entered the house with the intention of robbery. He will be produced in the court and custody will be demanded. Further investigation will take place later… We doubt he is of Bangladeshi origin…” He added, “Prima facie the accused is a Bangladeshi and after entering India illegally he changed his name. He was using Vijay Das as his current name. He came to Mumbai 5-6 months ago. He stayed in Mumbai for a few days and then in the vicinity of Mumbai. The accused used to work in a housekeeping agency.”
“There is primary evidence to anticipate that the accused is a Bangladeshi. He does not have valid Indian documents. There are some seizures that indicate that he is a Bangladeshi national,” added the DSP. Saif, 54, was admitted to Lilavati Hospital after being stabbed multiple times, including injuries to his neck and spine, while trying to stop the attacker. He had emergency surgery and is now recovering at the hospital. Doctors have confirmed that he is no longer in danger. The report submitted to the police station states that a housekeeper saw the attacker enter the bedroom of Saif's younger son Jehangir, also known as Jeh. The housekeeper informed Saif and his wife, Kareena Kapoor Khan, right away. There was a fight after the actor confronted the invader. The actor was seriously hurt during the altercation, and a portion of the blade broke off and became stuck in his body. Which was eventually removed during surgery.
The accused was reportedly working at a pub in Thane. The police traced him to a labour camp near a metro construction site in the Hiranandani Estate. Authorities said the accused is from West Bengal and goes by several names, including Bijoy Das, Vijay Das, Mohammad Illyas and BJ. There are also reports that an investigation is underway to confirm his nationality and whether he is an Indian or a Bangladeshi using fake identification. The primary suspect was taken into custody after a protracted manhunt that made use of CCTV footage that showed the assailant escaping Saif's home. Throughout Mumbai and the neighbouring areas, posters featuring his image were circulated.
Mumbai Police arrested Aakash Kailash Kanojia, 31, in Durg district after coordinating with Chhattisgarh Police after receiving a tipoff. He was captured by the Railway Protection Force on board the Gyaneshwari Express train. But it's still unclear how he's related to the crime. However, his involvement in the case is yet to be revealed. In another case, authorities in Madhya Pradesh later confirmed that a man who was arrested on Saturday had nothing to do with the stabbing event.
