Professor Karan Nathwani from the Electrical Engineering department at IIT Jammu has developed an innovative anti-drone system based on sound technology.
The system named sound-based detection represents a pioneering technology capable of identifying drones by detecting their distinct sound emissions. By cross-referencing these sound signatures with a comprehensive database, the system achieves precise drone identification.
"It is cost-effective and user-friendly, catering to the general public," stated Dr. Nathwani, highlighting the accessibility of the system. He emphasized its simplicity of operation, devoid of complications with cameras or radar. Dr. Nathwani further noted that the system was designed to address diverse challenges, rendering it versatile in application.
The impetus behind the creation of this system stemmed from rising security apprehensions related to drones, especially in the Jammu and Kashmir region. Drones originating from Pakistan have been utilized for the illicit transportation of weapons, cash, and narcotics. In response to this pressing issue, IIT Jammu has effectively developed a sound-based drone detection system.
The development process spanned between 6 months to 1 year, with the main challenge revolving around data management. Dr. Nathwani stressed the significance of partnering with security forces to guarantee the system's efficacy.
Dr. Nathwani stated, "We can furnish this system to the army contingent once they furnish us with data collected from comparable environments, enabling our AI technology to assimilate and adjust accordingly."
The sound-based drone detection system exhibits the ability to identify drones, aircraft, multiple drones, or birds within a range of 300 meters by analyzing their sound emissions. Manufacturing costs for this drone detection device vary between Rs 25,000 to Rs 40,000.
Moreover, Dr. Nathwani's emphasis on collaboration with security forces highlights the importance of leveraging real-world data to enhance the system's effectiveness, showcasing a proactive approach towards addressing evolving security challenges.
