The International Cricket Council (ICC) has cancelled the planned 2025 ICC Champions Trophy trophy tour in Skardu, Murree, and Muzaffarabad, which are located in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (POK). This decision came after the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) included these cities in the tour schedule. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) raised objections, leading to the cancellation. The PCB had originally planned a nationwide trophy tour of the Champions Trophy from November 16 to 24.
The PCB planned the trophy tour in anticipation of the mega event, which is scheduled to take place in Pakistan in February or March of 2025. However, recent reports suggest that the trophy tour has been cancelled in those places which fall within Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir's (POK) disputed territory. India's unwillingness to travel to Pakistan for the cricket tournament has caused controversy surrounding the Champions Trophy 2025. India has refused to travel to Pakistan for the tournament. Consequently, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has written to the ICC seeking an explanation for the refusal.
In its letter to the ICC, the PCB has asked for an official explanation of India's position. Neither the event format nor a possible hybrid model is mentioned in the communication from Pakistan. The PCB acknowledged in a statement that the ICC notified it of the BCCI's decision. According to reports, the PCB has sent the ICC's message to the Pakistani government, which will decide what to do next. This impasse between the BCCI and PCB has cast questions on the Champions Trophy's future. Pakistan has already set aside about 17 billion rupees to renovate stadiums in Rawalpindi, Lahore, and Karachi in anticipation of the competition the following year.
The ICC was expected to announce the schedule for the Champions Trophy in the second week of November, though the venues were not confirmed. The tentative schedule places the tournament from February 19 to March 9, with matches in Lahore, Rawalpindi, and Karachi. India and Pakistan have not played against each other in bilateral cricket series since 2012-13, when they faced off in India in both ODIs and T20Is. India last visited Pakistan in 2008 for the Asia Cup and has not gone back since the 26/11 terror attacks in Mumbai that same year.
In 2023, India's reluctance to go to Pakistan led to the Asia Cup being hosted in a hybrid format, with its matches taking place in Sri Lanka. It remains unclear if the Champions Trophy will be run in the same way or if it will be staged entirely outside of Pakistan.
