The Indian Air Force (IAF) Airbus C-295 made the first-ever official landing at Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIAL) on Friday. The 3.7-kilometre runway was tested by a Sukhoi SU-30 fighter jet in front of Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, his deputy, Devendra Fadnavis, and the state minister for civil aviation and cooperation, Murlidhar Mohol.
“The airport in Navi Mumbai would ensure ease of travel for passengers and reduce congestion from the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in Mumbai. We will aim for commercial operations before March 2025,” said Shinde in his statement. With a capacity to accommodate 20 million passengers during its first two phases of operation, NMIAL will be the second airport serving the Mumbai Metropolitan Area.
In its first year, NMIAL is projected to carry 12 million passengers out of that capacity. Comparably, by 2032, the capacity is expected to increase to about 90 million passengers annually. The airport is anticipated to be finished in five stages, the first two of which are currently operational and are scheduled to be completed by March 2025.
An estimated Rs 18,000 crore will be spent on the project. The nation's first airport with multi-modal connectivity is NMIAL. This involves connecting to the project through a metro system, rail, and road. It is scheduled to be connected by a waterway soon.
