Demonstrating India's preparedness and air defense prowess, the Indian Air Force carried out a unique landing drill involving Sukhoi-30 MKI fighter jets on the Lucknow-Agra Expressway in Uttar Pradesh on 6th April. The unique landing manoeuver was performed as a part of the Indian Air Force's Mission Gagan Shakti exercise.
The exercise follows shortly after the government sanctioned a significant enhancement project for the Su-30MKI fighter jet fleet frequently deployed by the Indian Air Force in various air drills. This initiative, valued at Rs 60,000 crore, seeks to enhance the aircraft's effectiveness by incorporating new radar systems, mission control systems, electronic warfare capabilities, and weaponry.
Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), in partnership with the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), will undertake the upgrade process. CB Ananthakrishnan, Chairman and Managing Director of HAL outlined that the project would unfold in two stages. Initially, the emphasis will be on implementing new avionics and radar systems, followed by improvements to the flight control systems.
In January, the Indian Air Force announced its plans of extending the operational lifespan of its Su-30 MKI fighter jets, which have been in active service for more than twenty years.
Defense officials have stated that they are currently investigating the feasibility of extending the Su-30 MKI aircraft's lifespan by another 20 years or more through thorough trials and testing. They highlighted that Russian aircraft are renowned for their robust airframes and components, making them capable of having their operational life prolonged.
