Following the Supreme Court Collegium's recommendation, a Delhi High Court judge was transferred after a large amount of cash was recovered from his residence as a result of a fire. Justice Yashwant Verma was sent back to the Allahabad High Court, his parent court.
A fire broke out at Justice Varma's official residence while he was away from the city, according to sources. His family quickly informed the fire brigade and the police. After putting out the fire, fire brigade staff found a large amount of cash in different rooms of the house. The incident report also noted the discovery of unaccounted cash in the bungalow. After receiving the information, Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sanjiv Khanna called a meeting of the Collegium. They all agreed to transfer Justice Verma back to the Allahabad High Court, where he had served until October 2021.
Sources also mentioned that discussions are ongoing about starting an investigation and possibly beginning impeachment proceedings against Justice Verma. Some judges in the Collegium are worried that simply transferring Justice Verma could harm the judiciary's reputation and weaken public trust in the legal system. They have asked him to step down voluntarily. If he refuses, Parliament may start the process of impeachment. In 1999, the Supreme Court established an internal procedure to investigate allegations of corruption, misconduct, or irregularities against High Court or Supreme Court judges, following the Constitution.
According to the guidelines, the Chief Justice first asks the accused judge for an explanation. If the response is not satisfactory or a deeper investigation is needed, the Chief Justice forms an in-house panel. This panel includes one Supreme Court judge and two Chief Justices from High Courts. Based on the investigation's findings, the judge may be asked to step down or face impeachment.
