The Houthi rebels in Yemen have pledged to keep carrying out military attacks on Israel and the United States after deadly airstrikes on the Ras Isa oil port, which resulted in the deaths of at least 74 people, according to CNN.
According to a statement released by Yemen's Houthi-controlled military, "Yemen will not back down from continuing its support operations for the Palestinian people until the Israeli aggression on Gaza stops and the siege is lifted," CNN reported. The group warned that US "aggression" would only result in more targeting, engagement, and confrontation. The US airstrikes on Thursday were some of the deadliest in Yemen, with at least 74 people killed and 171 others injured, according to Al Jazeera.
The US Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed that the strikes were aimed at disrupting the Houthis' fuel supplies and revenue sources. They described the operation as an effort to weaken the economic strength of the Iran-backed group.
In a post on social media on Thursday, CENTCOM said, "Today, US forces took action to eliminate this source of fuel for the Iran-backed Houthi terrorists. The objective of these strikes was to degrade the economic source of power of the Houthis." Since mid-March, the United States has been conducting airstrikes on Houthi targets in Yemen, focusing on their oil refineries, airports, and missile sites. President Donald Trump had promised to use "overwhelming force" until the US goal of preventing the Houthis from attacking shipping in the Red Sea is achieved.
The US military's attack on Ras Isa port has resulted in at least 38 deaths and about 102 injuries, according to Hodeidah's health office. In response to Israel's war in Gaza, the Houthis have fired multiple missiles at Israel and disrupted shipping in the Red Sea, claiming they are showing solidarity with Palestinians since the October 7, 2023, attacks, CNN reported.
