In the Gulf of Aden, the US Ship Maersk Detroit was targeted by three anti-ship ballistic missiles fired by Iran-backed Houthi forces. The incident highlights regional tensions and raises maritime security concerns. The US is expected to respond, assessing diplomatic and military options in light of the provocative attack.
Iranian-backed Houthi terrorists launched three anti-ship ballistic missiles from areas under Houthi control in Yemen. The target of the missile attack was the US-flagged, owned, and operated container ship M/V Maersk Detroit, which was in transit through the Gulf of Aden. This information was reported by the US Central Command (CENTCOM) on X.
During the missile attack, one projectile struck the sea, while the USS Gravely (DDG 107) successfully intercepted and neutralized the other two missiles. According to CENTCOM, the USS Gravely's prompt response averted any reported injuries or damage to the US-flagged vessel, M/V Maersk Detroit, which was the intended target of the Houthi-launched ballistic missiles.
CNN has reported that the US and UK executed additional strikes against Houthi targets in Yemen, according to a joint statement. The latest developments involve a coordinated effort to target the rebels' infrastructure, resulting in the striking of eight specific sites. The joint statement from the United States and the United Kingdom outlines the purposeful nature of the military action against the Houthi forces in Yemen.
In a coordinated effort, two nations executed strikes on Houthi targets, with backing from Canada, the Netherlands, Bahrain, and Australia, as reported by CNN. Significantly, senior military and defense officials confirmed the success of the recent attacks, which effectively obliterated missiles, weapons storage facilities, and drone systems.
Officials, addressing reporters in the aftermath of the Monday afternoon operation, affirmed that the strikes successfully attained their intended outcome. Nonetheless, the operation carried out on January 11 was of a smaller scale in comparison to the initial joint endeavour, which targeted more than 30 Houthi installations.
According to CNN, strikes reportedly focused on a Houthi underground storage facility and a site linked to Houthi missiles and air surveillance. A senior military official revealed that the US deployed fighter jets from the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower, along with surface vessels and a submarine, to target eight locations.
In addition, he stated that the operation involved firing approximately 25-30 precision-guided munitions, including Tomahawk cruise missiles, at the designated targets.
