Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi group has claimed responsibility for launching a “barrage of ballistic missiles” targeting Israel’s Jaffa area on Friday, marking a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict in West Asia. The development points to a widening of the regional crisis, as more actors appear to be getting directly involved.
According to a statement issued from Sanaa, Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Sairee said the attack was part of a coordinated operation carried out alongside allied groups across the region. He noted that the strike was conducted with support from what he described as the “resistance and jihad fronts in Iraq, Iran, Palestine, and Lebanon.”
Saree stated that the group "carried out a military operation using a barrage of ballistic missiles targeting vital Israeli enemy targets in the occupied Yaffa area". The reference to Yaffa relates to the area near Jaffa, a key urban region in Israel. He further claimed that the operation was jointly executed with forces linked to Iran and the Lebanon-based group Hezbollah, adding that the strike "successfully achieved its objectives."
The Houthis also signalled that their involvement in the conflict is likely to continue and may intensify. In the statement, the group "affirm that their military intervention in this crucial and exceptional battle is gradual and will not stop at this level". They warned that future actions would depend on what they described as "enemy escalation or de-escalation," suggesting a conditional approach to further military activity.
The statement went on to praise allied groups operating in Lebanon, Iraq, Iran, and Palestine. These groups were described as forces defending regional dignity against what the Houthis termed a “Western-Zionist scheme.” The language reflects the broader ideological framing often used by Iran-aligned groups in the region.
Following the reported missile launches, the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) acknowledged detecting a threat originating from Yemen. In a message posted on Telegram, the IDF said it had identified the launch of a missile directed toward Israeli territory. "Initial report - The IDF has identified the launch of a missile from Yemen toward Israeli territory; aerial defence systems are operating to intercept the threat. The public is requested to follow the Home Front Command's defensive guidelines," the statement read.
This exchange highlights the growing reach of the conflict, as Yemen-based forces are now directly targeting Israeli areas. It also underscores the expanding network of coordination among groups aligned with Iran, including those in Lebanon and Iraq, raising concerns about a broader regional confrontation.
Earlier in the week, the Houthis had already indicated increasing involvement. On Wednesday, the group claimed it had carried out its “third joint operation” in coordination with allied groups in Iran and Lebanon. That operation reportedly targeted what they described as “sensitive sites” in the “south of occupied Palestine.” While details of those strikes remain limited, the repeated claims suggest a pattern of escalating actions.
The latest developments come amid an already volatile situation in West Asia, where multiple fronts remain active. The involvement of the Houthis adds another dimension to the conflict, extending it beyond its immediate geographic boundaries. Their statements indicate a strategy of gradual escalation, tied closely to actions by their adversaries.
As tensions continue to rise, the possibility of further coordinated strikes cannot be ruled out. The situation remains fluid, with both sides signalling readiness to respond depending on how events unfold. The international community is likely to watch closely, as any further escalation could have significant implications for regional stability.
