Hong Kong's post office announced that it will stop offering sea mail and air mail services to the United States. This decision comes after the U.S. government, under President Donald Trump's leadership, revealed plans to impose charges on small-value parcels from Hong Kong, according to government officials on Wednesday.
The Hong Kong Post, in a statement, said, “When sending items to the US, people in Hong Kong should be prepared to pay exorbitant and unreasonable fees due to the US’s unreasonable and bullying acts,” Reuters reported. Earlier, the U.S. government announced that small-value parcels coming from Hong Kong to the U.S. would no longer be exempt from customs taxes. This change came after the Trump administration imposed a 120% tariff starting on May 2.
“The US is unreasonable, bullying and imposing tariffs abusively. Hong Kong Post will definitely not collect any so-called tariffs on behalf of the US,” the southern Chinese city’s post office said.
A notice from the US government earlier stated that postal items from Hong Kong containing only documents (and no goods) would not be affected. The notice also mentioned that Hong Kong, as a special administrative region of China, has been given tariffs similar to those imposed on Beijing. The Hong Kong government stated, “For sending items to the US, the public in Hong Kong should be prepared to pay exorbitant and unreasonable fees due to the US’ unreasonable and bullying acts,” AP reported.
On April 2, Trump announced large tariffs on all of the U.S.'s trading partners, ranging from 10% to 50%. However, he later decided to delay these tariffs for 90 days. The only exception was China, which faced a tariff of 145%.
