The central government has sent an additional 20 companies of the Central Armed Police Force (CAPF), or about 2,000 personnel, to Manipur following recent incidents of violence and difficulties in maintaining law and order.
According to sources cited by The New Indian Express on Wednesday (November 13), the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) ordered these units to be airlifted late Tuesday night for quick deployment. In Jakuradhor, Jiribam district, armed attackers wearing camouflage opened fire on the Borobekra police station and a nearby CRPF camp on Monday, killing at least ten suspected insurgents in the clash with the CRPF. A sizable cache of cutting-edge weapons was found after the clash.
According to sources, 15 new Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) companies have been sent from the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and five from the Border Security Force (BSF). These new reinforcements join the 198 CAPF companies already stationed in Manipur since last year, following ethnic clashes in May that led to over 200 deaths. The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has directed that these units will remain under the control of the Manipur government until 30 November, with a possibility of extending their deployment if needed.
Manipur has seen a rise in tensions in the last week, particularly following the incident in Jiribam on Monday. The state police acknowledged that other events were recorded throughout the Imphal Valley, where opposing armed groups engaged in fresh gunfire exchanges.
