Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah today virtually launched the National IED Data Management System (NIDMS), calling it a major step towards strengthening India’s counter-IED framework and internal security system.
Speaking at the launch, Shah said that with the introduction of NIDMS, coordination among different agencies would improve significantly. He said, “Inter-agency coordination will be much better with the launch of the new system. It will be a very effective way of delivering the right information at the right time and in the right place.”
The NIDMS has been developed by the National Security Guard (NSG). It is a secure, national-level digital platform designed for the systematic collection, collation and sharing of data related to Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs). The system aims to create a common and reliable database that can be accessed by various security agencies across the country.
Shah said that the platform would allow Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) units, state police forces and Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) to access and use a wide range of data available online. He added, “The system will function as a two-way platform,” enabling both sharing and updating of information by authorised agencies.
Highlighting the future role of the system, the Home Minister said that NIDMS would act as a strong protective shield in the fight against terrorism. He said, “In the coming times, the NIDMS will serve as a new protective shield by providing data for analysis during investigations of terrorist incidents across the country, wherever explosions have taken place or IEDs have been used.”
Shah also pointed out that the Home Ministry has generated large amounts of data over the years, but most of it has remained scattered. He said, “Various kinds of data have been generated over the past years, but until now, it has existed in silos.” He added that efforts are now being made to connect these data sources.
The Home Minister further said that work is underway to develop an advanced artificial intelligence-based software to analyse this data. Expressing confidence in the new platform, he said, “NIDMS would accelerate this process,” and described it as “an important milestone towards making the country safe from terrorism.”
