Dhaka has agreed to send a large vessel to the Pakistan Navy's upcoming wargame, Exercise Aman, next month, demonstrating the swift improvement of defence relations between the two countries. In more than ten years, this will be the first time a significant warship from the Bangladesh Navy participates in a Pakistani naval drill.
Bangladesh will send one of its five frigates—the other four are Chinese—for Exercise Aman, which is typically held in February. Bangladesh has two cutters manufactured in the United States, apart from the frigates. The Bangladesh Navy has previously dispatched a delegation, which typically consists of a few officers. Therefore, a significant increase in ties is indicated by the sending of a frigate. Other nearby nations like Sri Lanka and the Maldives are taking part this year, but they are only sending a delegation rather than warships. According to reports, Dhaka's pledge to deploy a warship is evidence of their developing friendship.
The PLA Navy from China will undoubtedly take part, although it is unclear if they will deploy a new flotilla or drive the three ships—a tanker, a frigate, and a destroyer—in the Indian Ocean toward Pakistan, supposedly for anti-piracy operations. According to sources, Pakistan has sent an invitation to the US Navy but has not yet received a commitment. Undoubtedly, the 105,000-ton Harry Truman, one of the US supercarriers, is engaged in strikes against the Houthi rebels in Yemen in the Red Sea. India is not participating in the action, but the British and French are, along with the US Navy.
Pakistan holds Exercise Aman ahead of India's Exercise Tropex to get attention, but it is not well received abroad. A noteworthy change is that Bangladesh is eager to engage in a significant way rather than sending a token delegation. A frigate, which weighs between two and three thousand tons, is a huge warship. However, since Sheikh Hasina, the country's prime minister since 2009, resigned in August of last year, Bangladesh and Pakistan have become closer, and a ship from Karachi entered Bangladesh delivering a clear message.
