In a tragic incident in Pakistan's Sindh province, the bodies of a Hindu farmer and his three young children were found hanging from a tree on Friday, October 4. The deceased were identified as 32-year-old Chaman Kolhi and his children: Bhagchand, 8, Hero, 6, and Sohni, 4. The bodies were discovered at a mango farm near Palli Morr in the Umerkot district, within the jurisdiction of the Bodar Farm police station.
Local authorities quickly removed the bodies and transported them to a nearby hospital for examination. Initial investigations suggest that Chaman Kolhi had been struggling with severe financial difficulties, worsened by a poor agricultural yield this season. Reports also indicated that Chaman faced marital tensions due to these hardships. Preliminary findings point to the possibility that he may have hanged his children before taking his own life, though a comprehensive investigation is ongoing to confirm the circumstances.
This heartbreaking event has brought attention to the harsh realities faced by the Hindu community in Sindh. Hindu activist Shiva Kacchi shared the devastating news on the social media platform X, expressing his outrage at the government's apparent inaction. "Tired of hunger and unemployment, Chaman Kolhi, a poor Hindu farmer, committed suicide along with his three innocent children. The incidence of suicide among the Hindu community in Sindh has greatly increased. The government and institutions have become silent spectators," Kacchi wrote.
The rising suicide rates among Sindh's Hindu community highlight the ongoing struggles faced by religious minorities in Pakistan. While significant resources are allocated by the Pakistan Army to maintain control over contested regions like Khyber, POB, and POJK, the dire situation faced by marginalised communities such as the Kolhi family often goes unnoticed.
As of now, the bodies have been sent for post-mortem examinations, and further updates on the investigation are awaited.
