Senior Hezbollah leader Sheikh Muhammad Ali Hammadi, who was on the FBI's most-wanted list, was killed outside his home in eastern Lebanon on Tuesday night, according to the Lebanese newspaper Al-Akhbar. The report states that Hammadi, who led Hezbollah's western al-Baqaa region, was shot by attackers who arrived in two vehicles.
Hammadi was taken to the hospital immediately after the attack. However, he was declared dead there. The reason behind Hammadi's killing is still unknown. Local reports have suggested that it could be related to a long-running family feud, but there has been no official confirmation of this. No one has taken responsibility for the attack so far. Hammadi was well-known for his role in a high-profile terrorist act and has been on the FBI's most-wanted list for decades. He took control of Lufthansa Flight 847, a West German aeroplane, in 1985 while it was carrying 153 people, including several Americans.
One American was killed and tortured during the hijacking. Hammadi was listed as a wanted criminal by the US law enforcement agency due to his involvement in this and other violent crimes against Western targets. The killing of Hammadi comes during a tough time for Hezbollah, which has been in conflict with Israel. The group fought in the 2023 war alongside Hamas, resulting in the deaths of at least seven senior Hezbollah commanders. Tensions increased when Israel targeted Hezbollah's supply lines, including destroying communication equipment in Syria and Israel. This attack on a top Hezbollah leader happens as the region faces ongoing violence, including a major Israeli military operation in the West Bank.
Israeli forces reported that at least nine Palestinians were killed during a raid on the city of Jenin, with many others injured. This action took place while a fragile ceasefire was in effect between Israel and Hezbollah-supported groups in southern Lebanon. Hamas continues to maintain solid control over Gaza after 15 months of war with Israel. There is now a landscape of destruction in Gaza, and many Palestinians are left to live amidst the debris of their former houses.
