On 22nd April 2024, Hamas ally and Iranian proxy Hezbollah in a statement stated that it fired “dozens” of Katyusha rockets at an army headquarters in northern Israel. The Lebanese militants said it was a retaliatory move to raids targetting villages in southern Lebanon.
The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) reported detecting around 35 launches originating from Lebanon into the Ein Zeitim area in northern Israel. They confirmed no injuries and stated that they targeted the launch sites in response. The IDF identified the source of the attack as the Arzoun area in southern Lebanon.
Since Hamas launched its unprecedented attack on Israel on October 7, sparking conflict in Gaza, there have been frequent exchanges of fire between the Israeli military and the Iran-backed Hezbollah. Amid escalating tensions between Israel and Iran, the Lebanese Shiite militant organization has increased its assaults on Israeli military positions along the border.
In a statement, Hezbollah declared that it had targeted "the headquarters of the 3rd Infantry Brigade of the 91st Division at Ein Zeitim Base" with numerous Katyusha rockets. They cited Israeli assaults on "southern villages and civilian homes," specifically mentioning recent incidents in Srifa, Odaisseh, and Rab Tlatin, as the motive behind their actions.
According to Lebanon's official National News Agency (NNA), Israeli airstrikes targeted the three villages on April 22. Since October 7, at least 376 individuals have lost their lives in Lebanon, predominantly Hezbollah fighters, but also includes 70 civilians. Israel has reported that 10 soldiers and eight civilians have lost their lives on its side of the border.
