A Hezbollah drone attack on a military base in central-northern Israel killed four Israeli soldiers and injured over sixty others, according to the Israeli military. The attack, which took place late on Sunday, ranks among the deadliest since the start of the conflict in October last year.
Hezbollah's unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) struck a base close to Binyamina, a town about 40 miles north of Tel Aviv and close to the Lebanese border, according to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). The IDF confirmed that seven soldiers suffered serious injuries in the attack. 61 people were reported injured in all, according to Israel's emergency agency, Magen David Adom. The terrorist organisation Hezbollah supported by Iran, took credit for the attack.
The Lebanese Ministry of Health reported that the drone strike was carried out in retaliation for Israeli airstrikes on Thursday that eliminated 22 people and left 117 injured. The group stated that the attack was directed specifically at the infantry unit of the IDF stationed in southern Lebanon, the Golani Brigade. According to a report, Hezbollah issued a statement in the name of late leader, Hassan Nasrallah, urging its followers to take up arms and "defend your people, your family, your nation, your values, and your dignity."
Hezbollah also warned Israel, stating that it will launch more attacks if Israel continues its military actions in Lebanon. "What it witnessed today in southern Haifa is nothing compared to what awaits it if it decides to continue its aggression against our noble and dear people," said the terror group according to the news agency AFP.
However, it still remains a mystery how Hezbollah's drones managed to enter the Israeli airspace covertly. There were no reports of alerts in the Binyamina area during the attack, despite the Israeli air defence systems being highly reliable. In an attempt to distract Israel's defence systems while the drones were advancing, Hezbollah allegedly fired rockets towards towns in northern Israel.
“These drones broke through Israel’s defence radars without detection and reached their target at the Golani Brigade’s training camp,” said Hezbollah in a statement. The IDF’s chief spokesperson, Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari, stated that the military would investigate the incident. "We'll look into and learn from the incident," he declared. “The threat of UAVs is something we’ve been dealing with since the war began. We need to improve our defences,” he added.
