Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, accused George Soros, a wealthy philanthropist and American investor, of harbouring "hatred" for Israel. According to allegations Musk highlighted, Soros finances non-governmental organisations purportedly associated with the Palestinian militant organization Hamas. Musk stated, "George Soros’s hatred of humanity includes Israel" .
Musk cited an accusation made by Israel's envoy to the UN that Soros had transferred more than $15 million into a network of non-governmental organisations that were supposedly aiding Hamas in its continuous war with Israel. "George Soros’ donations to organisations that seek the destruction of the State of Israel as a Jewish state are shameful. However, I am not surprised," Israeli ambassador Gilad Erdan told Fox News in December last year. Musk voiced his disapproval of US President Joe Biden's choice to give Soros the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the country's highest civilian honour.
Musk termed the acknowledgement as a ‘travesty’. "A travesty that Biden is giving Soros the Medal of Freedom, " he said on X. Musk also associated Soros with various fictional villains, such as Emperor Palpatine from Star Wars and Magneto from the Marvel Universe in his further post on X. His criticism of Soros and Biden was further heightened when he posted an AI-generated image of US President Joe Biden giving Emperor Palpatine a medal.
Soros has recently been in the news in India. The BJP has claimed that Congress leader Sonia Gandhi has connections with organisations that received funding from the billionaire, and these organisations have taken anti-India positions on various issues, including Kashmir. The Congress party has firmly denied these accusations. His name has also come up in Adani Group-related disputes, where it was claimed that the Organised Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP) was run by groups financed by Soros. The Adani Group was charged by the OCCRP with directing money into its companies using opaque funds domiciled in Mauritius.
