Jagmeet Singh, leader of Canada’s New Democratic Party (NDP) and a former ally of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, has made headlines with a bold warning directed at former U.S. President Donald Trump. "I have a message for Donald Trump. Our country (Canada) is not for sale. Not now, not ever," he declared in a video posted on the social media site X, formerly Twitter.
Singh stated that Canadians are proud of their nation and are willing to "fight like hell to defend it."
The NDP leader boasted about being an excellent neighbour and offering assistance to the United States after the Los Angeles fire, which has killed at least 24 people. “Right now, with the forest fires ravaging homes, Canadian firefighters showed up. That is who we are. And we show up and support our neighbours."
Singh has pledged to retaliate if the US imposes tariffs on Canada. He declared, "If Donald Trump thinks, if you think you can pick a fight with us, there will be a price to pay. I have committed that if Donald Trump imposes tariffs on us, we should respond with retaliatory tariffs in kind. I think that anyone running as Prime Minister should do the same."
Trump has been verballing about his scheme to take over Canada and make it the 51st state of the US. In early December, Trump posted on his social media platform, Truth Social, "Many Canadians want Canada to be the 51st state."
On Christmas, he outlined the advantages of Canada being an associated part of the US. "Their taxes would be cut by more than 60 per cent, their businesses would immediately double in size, and they would be militarily protected like no other country anywhere in the World."
Earlier last month, when Justin Trudeau resigned, Trump once again raised the idea of acquisitions and mergers, saying, "If Canada were to merge with the United States, there would be no tariffs, taxes would be greatly reduced, and they would be completely safe from the threat of Russian and Chinese ships that constantly surround them. Together, what a great nation it would be!!!"
Justin Trudeau quickly attacked Trump, stating, "There's not a shred of chance in hell that Canada will be part of the United States."
"Workers and communities in both our countries benefit from being each other's largest trading and security partners," he counted.
