On Friday, the Haryana government suspended mobile internet and bulk SMS services in at least 10 villages of Ambala district from December 6 to December 9, under Section 20 of the Telecommunications Act, 2023. Another report mentioned that 11 villages in the district are affected by the internet suspension.
According to news agencies, the action is intended to prevent the dissemination of false information and preserve public harmony. Nonetheless, necessary services like mobile recharges and banking continue to function. Dangdehri, Lohgarh, Manakpur, Dadiyana, Bari Ghel, Lhars, Kalu Majra, Devi Nagar, Saddopur, Sultanpur, and Kakru villages are among the impacted areas. Sumita Misra, Additional Chief Secretary (Home), issued the directive, which will be in force until 11:59 p.m. on December 9.
The suspension comes as 101 farmers from the Bhartiya Kisan Parishad (BKP) and other farmer groups are planning to march to Delhi from their protest site at the Shambhu border. The protest, which started on November 25, is focused on farmers' demands for a legal guarantee for Minimum Support Price (MSP) on crops, debt waivers, pensions for farmers and farm workers, and no increase in electricity tariffs. Sarwan Singh Pandher, the farmer leader, explained that the group plans to march without causing any damage to the barricades. "We hope the government allows us to protest peacefully," he added in an interview with news agency ANI. The farmers are willing to engage in discussions.
In the meantime, visuals showed police barricades and a significant security force at the Shambhu border to stop the situation from getting worse. Traffic police have also been deployed to control the situation. Deepender Singh Hooda, a Congress MP, criticized the administration for not carrying out its pledge to adopt MSP, which has sparked new demonstrations. “The government had earlier promised MSP but failed to deliver. We urge the government to engage in immediate dialogue with the farmers,” Hooda said.
However, farmers reported that the clash on National Highway 44 near Shambhu on the Punjab-Haryana border had left eight persons hospitalised and two more critically injured. "Police used their full force against us. We were quite disciplined and were holding the protest peacefully. We knew we wouldn't be able to fight the might of the force used against us," farmer leader Sarwan Singh Pandher told reporters, "So we have called back the protest for today." He further said, "Modiji cannot justify the actions taken against us. We are deeply hurt."
A video shared by the news agency IANS showed chaotic scenes at a police barricade on National Highway 44. In the 73-second video, white tear gas smoke filled the air, surrounding the protesting farmers. As the video zooms out, rolls of barbed wire can be seen and the farmers, affected by the tear gas, are seen retreating. One elderly farmer, struggling from the gas, is helped by other protesters.
