Hanwha Group's defense division has unveiled its upgraded K9 Vajra self-propelled Howitzer (SPH) to the Indian Army, showcasing a range of new features and advancements. The South Korean company claims that the enhanced version, named the K9A2, represents a groundbreaking development in artillery technology, providing the military with innovative opportunities for artillery deployment and enabling rapid shoot-and-scoot operations to enhance survivability and extend battlefield coverage.
A significant improvement in the K9A2 SPH is the introduction of a full-automatic turret. This advanced turret system autonomously handles ammunition feeding, loading, and propellant charge, ensuring a 100% automatic process. With this feature, the K9A2 is capable of firing up to 10 rounds per minute, substantially increasing its rate of fire and overall operational efficiency.
Furthermore, the K9A2 incorporates Composite Rubber Tracks (CRT), marking another notable addition. This cutting-edge track system combines the advantages of wheels and traditional steel tracks, delivering enhanced mobility across diverse terrains. The CRT technology offers several benefits, including a weight reduction of up to 50% compared to steel tracks.
This reduction in weight contributes to improved vehicle performance, increased top speed, reduced noise and vibrations, and lower fuel consumption. By employing the K9A2's CRT system, the SPH exhibits greater maneuverability and agility during critical operations, allowing it to promptly respond to changing battlefield requirements.
The Indian Army has already expressed its intent to acquire an additional 100 K9 Vajra Howitzers with a winter kit specially designed for high-altitude regions. Additionally, plans are underway to procure 100 more units for deployment along the western front, featuring improved capabilities to meet evolving operational demands.
The introduction of the upgraded K9A2 variant by Hanwha Group signifies a significant advancement in artillery technology, providing the Indian Army with enhanced firepower, mobility, and versatility on the battlefield. These developments further strengthen the military's ability to respond effectively to various operational scenarios, ensuring the nation's defense capabilities are bolstered in critical regions.
