HAL-Safran Join Hands to Build 4,000 SHP-Class Aravalli Helicopter Engine

Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and French aerospace major Safran Helicopter Engines have signed a contract to develop a new-generation high-power helicopter engine for India’s expanding rotary-wing requirements. The engine, named ‘Aravalli’, will be developed through SAFHAL Helicopter Engines, a joint venture between the two companies.
The Aravalli engine will belong to the 3,500–4,000 shaft horsepower (SHP) class. The programme marks an important step in India’s efforts to build its own capabilities in helicopter propulsion. High-power engines are a key part of advanced helicopter platforms, and the project aims to strengthen domestic expertise in this critical technology.
The contract covers the complete lifecycle of the engine. This includes its design, development, manufacturing, supply and lifecycle support. The approach is aimed at creating an end-to-end framework for advanced propulsion technology within India. It will also help develop local capabilities across several stages of the engine’s development and use.
The Aravalli engine is expected to power future Indian helicopter platforms. The programme will strengthen capabilities in engine design, manufacturing, integration and maintenance. These areas are important for building a stronger domestic aerospace industry and reducing reliance on foreign technologies for critical defence systems.
The partnership also adds momentum to the strategic aerospace and defence relationship between India and France. HAL and Safran will combine their respective expertise and capabilities to develop the high-power engine. Their cooperation is expected to support India’s long-term requirements for advanced rotary-wing platforms.
The programme is also in line with the government’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative. India has been working to increase domestic production and reduce dependence on imported defence equipment and technologies. Developing an indigenous helicopter engine is a major part of this effort, given the importance and complexity of propulsion systems.
Through the Aravalli programme, HAL and Safran aim to establish a stronger industrial base for high-power helicopter engines in India. The project is expected to contribute to the country’s ability to design, manufacture, integrate and maintain advanced propulsion systems domestically.
The development will also support India’s future helicopter programmes and its growing need for rotary-wing platforms. By covering manufacturing and lifecycle support along with design and development, the programme seeks to build capabilities that extend beyond the production of a single engine.
The 3,500–4,000 SHP-class Aravalli engine therefore represents a significant development in India’s helicopter propulsion ambitions. It brings together HAL’s aerospace and defence capabilities with Safran’s expertise in helicopter engines. The partnership is expected to strengthen India’s industrial base and contribute to the development of next-generation indigenous helicopter platforms.
