Guyana's defense capabilities received a significant enhancement as the country recently acquired two Dornier 228 aircraft from Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), an aerospace and defense company based in India.
The announcement came from Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali, the President of Guyana, who posted on the platform X, previously known as Twitter, to convey the news to both the nation and the international community. As per President Ali's tweet, the two Dornier 228 aircraft were handed over to the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) and were received at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) on the preceding evening.
Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali, President of Guyana wrote on X, "The Hindustan Aeronautics Limited delivered two Dornier 228 planes to the Guyana Defence Force. The planes arrived at Cheddi Jagan International Airport last evening aboard two Boeing C-17 Globemaster military transport planes."
The Dornier 228 planes were transported to Guyana with the assistance of two Boeing C-17 Globemaster military transport aircraft.
The Dornier 228 aircraft is recognised for its versatility and dependability, rendering it suitable for a broad spectrum of military and civilian uses. Its robust construction and excellent performance characteristics make it well-suited for diverse missions, such as surveillance, reconnaissance, medical evacuation, and transportation operations.
Previously, Guyana's Finance Minister and the Deputy General Manager of EXIM Bank finalized an agreement for a loan of $23.27 million from India's Export-Import Bank. This deal holds significance due to the substantial Indian community in Guyana and paves the way for collaboration between the two nations, especially in defense, aimed at fostering peace and security.
The loan supports the procurement of aircraft essential for maritime patrols and troop transportation. It's worth noting that India has previously supplied similar aircraft to neighbouring countries like Maldives and Sri Lanka, underscoring its dedication to regional security and cooperation.
