Gurmeet Ram Rahim Convicted-Supporters go on a rampage, more than 30 dead

The controversial Chief of Dera Sacha Sauda, Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh was held guilty of raping two women by a CBI court in Panchkula, Haryana. As soon as the verdict was announced, his followers went on a rampage indulging into violence, arson and wide spread lawlessness. More than 30 people died and 250 people were injured in the extensive violence that ensued.
Dera followers most of whom were armed with lathis clashed with the police but the security forces were outnumbered by the followers outside the court house. The supporters of controversial chief of the sect were allowed to congregate despite section 144 in place. Haryana Government despite the warnings and anticipation that followers might turn violent seemed to be not prepared when the streets of Panchkula erupted. Violence quickly spread to other areas like Sirsa and other parts of Punjab. Some Areas of Delhi also witnessed violence.
Gurmeet Ram Rahim in the meantime was moved to a VIP guest house in Rohtak. His sentence will be announced on Monday. OB Vans of Media were attacked and set on fire and many journalists were attacked by the Dera followers.
The prime Minister, Narendra Modi has tweeted about the violence expressing his condemnation and distress.
