A peaceful day of prayer turned into chaos and fear at a gurdwara in Moers, Germany, when a clash broke out between two groups inside the religious premises. The incident occurred in the Duisburg locality on Monday, where worshippers had gathered expecting a routine and calm prayer service. Instead, the situation escalated quickly, leaving multiple people injured and causing panic among those present.
Eyewitness videos circulating online show disturbing scenes from inside the gurdwara. People can be seen shouting, pushing, and running for safety as violence unfolded. In the chaos, turbans were thrown into the air, and individuals reportedly used Kirpans to attack each other. The violence took place in the presence of the Guru Granth Sahib, adding to the shock and distress of the community members who had gathered for prayer.
One witness described how the situation turned violent within moments. “Shortly before the prayer service, attackers used pepper spray, then one fired a pistol. I also saw knives,” a 56-year-old witness told Bild. This account reflects the sudden and intense nature of the clash, which caught many worshippers off guard.
As the situation worsened, German authorities responded with a large-scale deployment. Nearly 100 police personnel were sent to the scene to control the situation. This included a specialised Special Task Force (SEK) unit. A helicopter was also deployed for aerial monitoring, indicating the seriousness of the incident and the effort to ensure public safety.
According to reports by German daily Bild, cited by ANI, police later recovered cartridge cases from the site. This raised suspicions that a blank-firing weapon may have been used during the clash. However, authorities confirmed that no firearm has been recovered so far. Despite an extensive search operation, no active gunman was found at the scene. Police did confirm that one individual has been taken into custody in connection with the incident.
Emergency services arrived quickly and treated several injured individuals at the location. Most of the injuries were reported to be head injuries. The sudden outbreak of violence caused panic among worshippers, many of whom rushed out of the building in distress. According to Neue Ruhr Zeitung (NRZ), some people even fled barefoot in their attempt to escape the situation safely.
Initial investigations suggest that the violence may not have been random. Instead, it appears to be linked to an ongoing dispute within the gurdwara’s management. Tensions between former committee members and the current leadership are believed to have been building for some time. The disagreement reportedly involves issues related to community funds and control over decision-making within the gurdwara.
An eyewitness highlighted the root of the conflict, saying, “The background is a dispute between former committee members and the current ones. It also involves money belonging to the community. There have been problems and trouble for quite some time. But mainly it’s about influence and who has the say here in the temple.” This statement points to deeper internal conflicts that may have triggered the violent confrontation.
Authorities in Germany have now launched a detailed investigation into the incident. The focus is not only on identifying those responsible for the violence but also on understanding the underlying issues that led to the clash. A police spokesperson confirmed that inquiries are ongoing and are “proceeding in all directions.”
The incident has left the local community shaken. A place meant for peace and prayer became the site of violence and fear within minutes. While the situation is now under control, the event has raised concerns about internal disputes escalating into public violence, especially in sensitive and sacred spaces like religious institutions.
