Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw visited Gandhinagar on Monday to personally review the progress of four semiconductor chip plants that are at different stages of development.
After the meeting, which was attended by Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi, and IT Minister Arjun Modhwadia, Vaishnaw told reporters that work on all four projects is “showing good progress”.
He said that under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India is strongly focusing on electronics manufacturing and semiconductor fabrication to strengthen its position in the global technology sector.
“Three plants are expected to reach a good production level within the next two to three months, with pilot production already started at Kaynes and CG sites,” Mr Vaishnaw said.
He added that Micron’s mini-plant has already begun pilot production and is being scaled up further, while the fabrication facility coming up in Dholera is also moving forward at a steady pace.
“Dholera is set to become a major high-tech manufacturing hub in the days to come,” the minister said.
Vaishnaw noted that semiconductors are the foundation of today’s digital world, powering critical systems across healthcare, transport, communication, defence, and space. As global economies move toward deeper digitalisation and automation, semiconductors have become key to ensuring economic strength and strategic independence.
Since the launch of the India Semiconductor Mission in 2021, the country has turned its vision of building a semiconductor ecosystem into reality within just four years.
To support this vision, the government announced a Rs 76,000 crore Production Linked Incentive scheme, most of which has already been allocated to active projects.
A major milestone came on August 28 with the launch of one of India’s first end-to-end Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test Pilot Line Facilities in Sanand, Gujarat, where CG-Semi rolled out the first ‘Made in India’ chip.
In June 2023, the government approved the first proposal for setting up a semiconductor unit in Sanand.
So far, ten semiconductor manufacturing projects worth over Rs 1.60 lakh crore have been approved across six states—Gujarat, Assam, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Odisha, and Andhra Pradesh.
The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology has already begun preparing for the next phase of India’s semiconductor programme, called Semicon 2.0, and is holding internal discussions with various ministries to finalise its framework.
