The Gujarat High Court has approved the demolition of illegal structures around Chandola Lake, which has been known as a hub for illegal Bangladeshis. The court has also dismissed the applications made by a Muslim party opposing the demolitions.
An application was filed in the High Court by Muslim parties requesting an urgent hearing. The Court proceeded with the hearing even though it was a public holiday. After the hearing, the High Court rejected the application. During the hearing, the government stated that there was no need for a notice to remove illegal constructions on government land.
It was also revealed that some individuals from the Chandola Lake area had links to terrorist groups. The government highlighted that this posed a threat to national security. After hearing both sides of the case, the Gujarat High Court dismissed all the applications and allowed the government to proceed with the demolition of illegal constructions.
The advocate representing the petitioners said that although 18 people had requested the court to stop the demolition, the court clearly refused to grant a stay. He mentioned that the petitioners might now file a new request asking for rehabilitation.
He further explained that many of the petitioners have been living in the area for about 50 years, and even if someone is living there without proper permission, they must still be given a 15-day notice before being evicted. The advocate also highlighted that after the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam, several people detained by the police were later confirmed to be Indian citizens. Despite the appeal, the High Court rejected the petition and confirmed that the demolition drive will continue as planned, with no stay granted. Speaking to the media at the site, Ahmedabad Police Chief G.S. Malik said that Gujarat Police had carried out a large-scale search operation three days earlier, during which illegal immigrants were detained.
He clarified that the current demolition of illegal structures is being done lawfully and according to legal procedures. However, the court rejected the arguments from the Muslim party, giving the government the legal green light to move forward with the demolition process.
