Greta Thunberg, a Swedish environmental activist, made headlines recently when she was named "Antisemite of the Week" by the Jewish watchdog group StopAntisemitism. This comes after her arrest during an anti-Israel protest. The New York Post reported that the group accused Thunberg of supporting protesters who oppose Israel for using her activism as a vehicle to promote anti-Semitism. The group added, “She has sadly transformed her activism into a platform for vile Jew-hatred.”
The 21-year-old activist was arrested by Police on September 4 as she demonstrated with Students Against the Occupation. The group called on Copenhagen University to stop its partnerships with Israel, including cooperation programs on climate change. StopAntisemitism founder Liora Rez has commented on the arrest, saying that Thunberg prioritised her hatred towards Israel over her ecology campaign despite its efforts to tackle climate disasters.
The statement issued by founder Liora Rez stated, “Sadly, Greta's hatred of the world's only Jewish nation eclipses her love of the environment. Despite Israel being a global leader in tackling climate disasters and rushing to aid in crises worldwide, Greta sides with their homicidal terrorist enemies.”
“Her actions speak louder than her words. She claims to care about the future of humanity but Greta's hypocrisy is on full display as she's been active in championing Hamas leaders who openly call for genocide.”
Having previously demonstrated against Israel Thunberg drew a lot of criticism for holding a sign that many saw to be filled with antisemitic imagery. She took down the image later on and denied any racist connotations, saying instead that the toy octopus seen in the picture was something some autistic people use as a tool of communication. "The toy in the picture is a tool often used by autistic people to communicate feelings," she remarked.
