In an effort to thwart US President Donald Trump's plans to annex the Arctic island, Greenlandic parliament decided to create a new government on Thursday, according to local media.
Four out of the five parties elected to Greenland’s Parliament earlier this month have joined forces to create a coalition. This new government will hold 23 out of the 31 seats in the legislature. The newspaper Sermitsiaq reported that the agreement will be signed on Friday, according to Jens-Frederik Nielsen, the leader of Demokraatit, the largest party in Parliament. The agreement comes amid Trump’s efforts to gain control of Greenland "one way or the other".
US Vice President J.D. Vance is set to visit Greenland on Friday, where he will tour America's Pituffik Space Base. This base plays a key role in monitoring missiles and supporting missile defense operations. Meanwhile, after an unexpected win in the March 11 election, Greenland’s new leader, Nielsen, aims to form the widest possible coalition to push back against US influence. The final coalition agreement includes almost all parties except Naleraq, which withdrew from the talks on Monday. US President Donald Trump had shown interest in Greenland due to its valuable mineral resources and its strategic location along important air and sea routes. With the US, Russia, and China competing for power in the Arctic, Greenland’s significance has only grown.
"The new coalition agreement could not have come at a more opportune time as it will signal to the Vances who arrive on the same day the unity forged in defiance of what has been perceived as a campaign of disrespect and intimidation," stated Dwayne Ryan Menezes, managing director and founder of the Polar Research and Policy Initiative.
