West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose lodged a defamation lawsuit against Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee at the Calcutta High Court. This action followed remarks made by Banerjee the previous day, where she claimed that women had expressed fear about visiting Raj Bhavan due to his activities, according to a reliable source.
Earlier in the day, Bose condemned Banerjee's comments, stating that public representatives should refrain from creating "erroneous and slanderous impressions."
The Bengal Governor, CV Ananda Bose, took legal action by filing a defamation suit against Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and certain leaders of the Trinamool Congress (TMC), as per a source familiar with the matter.
During an administrative meeting at the state secretariat on Thursday, Banerjee stated that she had received reports from women who expressed fear about visiting Raj Bhavan due to recent incidents there.
According to the source, "Governor CV Ananda Bose moved the Calcutta High Court and initiated a defamation suit against Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and her party leaders for their remarks."
Earlier on May 2, a contractual female employee of Raj Bhavan had accused Bose of molestation, prompting the Kolkata Police to launch an investigation into the matter.
When approached for comment, TMC Rajya Sabha MP Dola Sen stated that she would refrain from making any statements until she had discussed the matter with the party leadership.
"I need to consult with my party leadership to understand the situation. This is a sensitive matter," Sen told PTI. Senior BJP leader Rahul Sinha voiced his support for Governor Bose's decision to file the defamation suit.
"I believe Governor Bose has made the correct move. He should have taken this step earlier. I fully endorse his action," Sinha said. CPI(M) veteran leader Sujan Chakraborty expressed concern over the ongoing conflict between Bose and Banerjee, emphasizing its detrimental impact on the state.
"This ongoing conflict is harmful to West Bengal. Both sides appear to have overlooked their constitutional duties. Their actions are tarnishing the image of West Bengal on the national stage," Chakraborty remarked.
