India is set to address online and phone frauds imminently through a comprehensive strategy involving collaboration between government entities and private telecom companies.
Senior government officials have announced that the Calling Name Presentation (CNAP) service will be operational within 100 days of the new government assuming office. Additionally, plans are underway to establish a National Cyber Security Agency (NCSA).
Officials have outlined plans for the National Cyber Security Agency (NCSA) to serve as a central body for addressing digital frauds. Additionally, the agency will promote the creation of tools aimed at safeguarding against cyber threats and frauds, with particular attention given to supporting small businesses and individuals lacking access to advanced technology.
An official informed ET that telecom companies have agreed upon a model for implementing the Calling Name Presentation (CNAP), with the responsibility for identification resting with the originating network of a call.
On February 23, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) proposed the implementation of CNAP as a solution to mitigate fraudulent calls.
This measure will restrict individuals posing as law enforcement agencies, banks, and customs agents, thereby curbing fraudulent activities.
CNAP will inform call recipients about the identity verification associated with the SIM card used by the caller. "The telecom service provider initiating the call will verify the caller's identity and ensure that correct information is relayed to the recipient," stated a second official, who added, "This service protects the call recipient's right to privacy."
This initiative is expected to significantly reduce instances of fraudulent activities perpetrated by individuals impersonating law enforcement agencies, banks, and customs agents. As India moves towards a more secure telecommunications environment, CNAP stands as a vital tool in safeguarding citizens against phone scams and enhancing trust in digital communication channels.
