The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) is in contact with Elon Musk's social media platform X over recent incidents where its AI chatbot, Grok, replied using Hindi slang and offensive language.
The IT ministry is investigating the problem and intends to look into the causes of the inappropriate language used by the chatbot. We are in touch, we are talking to them (X) to find out why it is happening and what are the issues. They are engaging with us," news agency PTI quoted ministry sources as saying. Recently, Grok surprised users by giving responses full of slang and curse words when triggered. On subjects like politics, movies, and celebrities, some of its replies seemed surprisingly opinionated. Furthermore, the chatbot has occasionally utilised derogatory language and regional slang. At one point, Grok even called Elon Musk a "major disinformation spreader."
During an exchange on X, a user asked Grok to list their "10 best mutuals." When there was no quick reply, the user posted a comment with a Hindi expletive directed at the AI. In response, Grok repeated the same expletive back to the user. Grok, created by xAI, is an advanced conversational AI assistant that runs on a powerful Large Language Model (LLM). When announcing its launch in November 2023, xAI explained that the chatbot was designed to understand and respond in a human-like manner, with a strong focus on reasoning and problem-solving. "Grok is designed to answer questions with a bit of wit and has a rebellious streak, so please don’t use it if you hate humour,” xAI said in a blog post announcing Grok.
On February 17 of this year, Grok 3 was released, claiming a tenfold boost in processing power over Grok 2. It has an exclusive 'Think' mode that enables it to think for a long time before responding. Grok 3 was launched on February 17 this year, offering ten times more computing power than its earlier version, Grok 2. It also includes a special 'Think' mode, which enables it to take more time to think and provide well-reasoned answers. The new features of Grok 3 include multimodal features for text and visual interactions and DeepSearch, which rapidly synthesises data from several sources.
