A non-profit advocacy organisation based in California has announced a proposal to nominate Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize. The group said the proposal is based on what it sees as Modi’s leadership in areas such as diplomacy, climate-related efforts, digital inclusion, and inclusive development.
The proposal was made public on Friday by the Declaration of Consciousness Movement (DOCM) during a press conference held in Chennai, in southern India. Representatives of the organisation explained that the move reflects their belief that Modi’s approach to governance matches the values and ideas promoted by their movement.
According to DOCM, the proposed nomination is rooted in the concept of “consciousness-based leadership.” The organisation describes this framework as one that focuses on ethical governance, compassion, unity, and the collective well-being of society. DOCM said it believes these principles are important in addressing modern global challenges and fostering long-term peace.
The Declaration of Consciousness Movement was founded by Adhipen Bose Nandhiji, who is known as a supporter of values-based leadership and social transformation. The organisation presents itself as a global nonprofit that works to bring ethical principles into governance, education, and civic life. According to DOCM, Nandhiji has developed initiatives that combine traditional contemplative practices with modern behavioural and social research methods.
During the announcement, DOCM also shared its broader vision beyond the proposed Nobel nomination. The group said it plans to advocate for the creation of a World Consciousness Day. This proposed international observance, according to the organisation, would be inspired by India’s philosophical and spiritual traditions. DOCM noted that the idea builds on existing global observances, including World Yoga Day, as well as the growing international recognition of Maha Shivratri.
The organisation outlined nine guiding principles that it believes form the foundation of an ethical and harmonious global society. These principles include nonviolence, equality, and freedom. They also highlight the importance of women’s and children’s rights, respect for elders, and environmental responsibility. In addition, the principles stress the need for ethical institutions and unity that goes beyond cultural and ideological differences.
DOCM said these values are central to its mission and guide its work across different regions. The organisation explained that it operates through four international programmes. These programmes focus on peace dialogue, education and cultural transformation, consciousness research, and planetary awareness. Through these efforts, DOCM aims to encourage discussions on ethical leadership and collective responsibility.
The group stated that it hopes to promote national adoption of its declaration in India. In the longer term, DOCM said it plans to seek consideration of the declaration as a resolution at the United Nations. According to the organisation, such a step would help bring greater global attention to the role of ethical and consciousness-based approaches in governance and international cooperation.
DOCM also provided general information about the Nobel Peace Prize nomination process. It noted that nominations can be submitted by qualified individuals and organisations, including academics, former Nobel laureates, and certain recognised institutions. The organisation added that the Norwegian Nobel Committee does not publicly confirm the names of nominees, in keeping with its established procedures.
In a statement released alongside the announcement, DOCM said that the world is currently facing serious challenges, including climate change, social polarisation, and geopolitical tensions. The organisation argued that these issues require new ways of thinking about peace and governance. According to the statement, approaches that emphasise awareness, cooperation, and ethical leadership are increasingly necessary in today’s interconnected world.
DOCM maintained that its proposal to nominate Prime Minister Modi reflects its perspective on leadership that seeks to balance development with ethical responsibility. The organisation said it believes that recognising such leadership at a global level can help encourage dialogue on peace, unity, and shared human values.
The announcement in Chennai marks the beginning of DOCM’s advocacy efforts related to the proposed nomination and its wider initiatives. The organisation said it will continue to promote its ideas through dialogue, education, and international engagement, while emphasising the importance of consciousness, ethics, and collective wellbeing in shaping the future.
