In a horrific incident, the Jakarta Islamic Centre Grand Mosque in Indonesia was destroyed on Wednesday after its huge dome collapsed following a giant fire.
A dramatic video clip, which has gone viral on social media, shows the dome of the mosque collapsing amid a plume of smoke and dust.
The dome was destroyed by a fire during its renovation. Firefighters were alerted about the blaze shortly after 3 pm local time, with at least ten fire engines being dispatched to the scene, Indonesia media reported. Video footage showed flames and smoke billowing from the mosque's dome just before it collapsed.
The mosque, undergoing renovations, was surrounded by scaffolding when the incident occurred. However, as per media reports, officials have said that there were no casualties. Local media added that police are investigating the cause of the fire and have questioned contractors working in the building, reported Gulf Today.
The mosque, situated in a complex alongside education, commercial and research facilities, had caught fire exactly 20 years ago in October 2002. It had taken over five hours to extinguish the fire at that time. The fire at the mosque was caused by a short circuit, according to reports, because renovation work was being done at the time.
