On Friday evening, a suspected attack at a Christmas market in Magdeburg, Germany, left at least two people dead and numerous others injured, as reported by CNN.
A car deliberately drove into a crowd at a busy market, causing multiple deaths and injuries. Saxony-Anhalt Prime Minister Reiner Haseloff, as reported by local broadcaster MDR, confirmed that the victims included an adult and a toddler. The tragic incident happened in the middle of a popular holiday market, leaving 68 people injured.
Among them, 15 were seriously hurt, 37 had moderate injuries, and 16 suffered minor injuries. Around 100 firefighters and 50 rescue personnel were quickly sent to the scene to help the injured and take them to nearby hospitals. Local authorities are working quickly to handle the crisis and ensure no further harm is caused.
According to CNN, German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser voiced her shock and grief over the tragic incident following the suspected attack. "This news from Magdeburg is deeply shocking. The emergency services are doing everything they can to care for the injured and save lives. All our thoughts are with the victims and their families," Faeser wrote in a post on social media platform X. She also assured the public that security officials were looking into the situation to find out more information about the attack.
German Prime Minister Haseloff announced that the suspected driver involved in the attack had been caught. He explained that initial findings indicate the driver acted alone. Authorities are now gathering more details and questioning the suspect.
"We are currently in the process of compiling all further data and also carrying out the interrogation. According to the current information, it is an individual perpetrator, so there is no longer any danger to the city because we were able to arrest him," Haseloff stated in a televised statement on Friday.
However, the perpetrator of the accident is identified as a Saudi national and has been taken into custody in relation to Friday's attack. Tamara Zieschang, the interior minister of Germany, claims that he had "a permanent residence permit" after he moved to Germany in 2006. He has been practising medicine in Bernburg, which is located about 40 kilometres (25 miles) south of Magdeburg. “As things stand, he is a lone perpetrator, so that as far as we know, there is no further danger to the city," Saxony-Anhalt's governor, Reiner Haseloff, told reporters, according to AP. The reason behind the attack is still unknown. Local broadcaster MDR reports that the suspect was not previously known to German authorities as an Islamist.
