In Germany, a knife attack at a rally left six people injured, including a prominent critic of Islam, drawing immediate condemnation from national leaders. The incident occurred just days before EU-wide elections, adding to concerns over rising politically motivated violence in the country. Interior Minister Nancy Faeser hinted at the possibility of Islamist motivation behind the assault.
The wounded individuals were among those attending the rally, highlighting the vulnerability of public gatherings to such attacks. The incident underscores ongoing tensions surrounding issues related to Islam and freedom of speech in Germany, sparking debates about security measures and the protection of individuals expressing controversial viewpoints.
Authorities are investigating the attack to determine the motives behind it and to prevent further violence. The incident serves as a reminder of the challenges faced in maintaining public safety and protecting freedom of expression in a diverse society.
In the city of Mannheim, southwest Germany, a man wielding a knife attacked multiple people on the market square at around 11:35 am local time, according to a statement from the police. The incident occurred during a rally organised by Pax Europa, a campaign group opposed to radical Islam. Five of the wounded individuals were participants in the rally, while a police officer who intervened was also stabbed multiple times in the back of the head.
Authorities responded to the attack by firing at the assailant, injuring him. However, the extent and severity of injuries sustained by both the victims and the attacker are yet to be determined. The identity of the assailant remains unknown at this time, as investigations into the incident continue.
Chancellor Olaf Scholz condemned the violence, stating that such actions are unacceptable in a democratic society. He called for severe punishment for the perpetrator responsible for the attack. Meanwhile, Pax Europa reported that one of the victims was Michael Stuerzenberger, a German far-right activist and blogger who was scheduled to participate in the rally. Stuerzenberger sustained serious stab wounds to his face and leg during the assault, as reported by the group.
Stuerzenberger, a well-known figure in Germany's anti-Islam movement, has been active in campaigning against Islam for several years. His organization, Pax Europa, has faced accusations of Islamophobia from Bavarian security services.
Interior Minister Faeser has urged for a comprehensive investigation into the attacker's motives. She expressed concern that if the investigation reveals an Islamist motive, it would underscore the ongoing threat posed by Islamist violence.
Germany has remained vigilant against potential Islamist attacks since the eruption of the Israel-Hamas conflict. The country's domestic intelligence chief has warned of an increased risk of such attacks.
In addition to the threat of Islamist violence, Germany has witnessed a surge in attacks targeting politicians ahead of the EU Parliament elections. Recent incidents include an assault on European parliament lawmaker Matthias Ecke and an attack on former Berlin mayor Franziska Giffey.
German President Steinmeier has voiced his concerns about the rising trend of political violence and emphasised the importance of rejecting violence in political discourse.
