German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has announced that Germany is prepared to swiftly deploy its forces to aid allies, with 35,000 military personnel ready for action.
He stated that Germany has consistently responded to the onset of Russia's invasion of Ukraine and, in light of this, the Bundeswehr reaffirms its commitment to defending Northeastern and Central Europe.
Scholz said, that nearly 35,000 German soldiers stand prepared to offer operational assistance to allies in the event of an emergency.
The German Chancellor highlighted the ongoing tension in the Baltic countries' security landscape. He underscored that two years ago, Berlin assumed the responsibility of safeguarding Estonia's airspace, followed by Latvia's this year.
Additionally, Scholz emphasised Germany's readiness to defend every square centimeter of NATO territory.
French Minister of the Armed Forces, Sebastien Lecornu, expressed Paris's intention to establish rapid reaction forces aimed at safeguarding European citizens. These forces would undertake tasks beyond the capabilities of the North Atlantic Alliance.
Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski asserted that the European Union should take charge of bolstering its defence considering the United States' focus on countering China.
He noted that discussions surrounding a European army create unnecessary confusion, as they entail the integration of national armies, an outcome he believes is unlikely to materialise.
European nations are intensifying their military preparedness amidst evolving global dynamics. While Germany pledges substantial troop deployment, France and Poland advocate for independent defence mechanisms within the European Union. The discourse on a unified European army underscores ongoing debates regarding the feasibility and necessity of such a venture.
