The Nag Mark 2, a domestically produced third-generation fire-and-forget anti-tank guided missile, successfully completed field evaluation testing on Monday, according to the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).
According to the Defence Ministry, the missile demonstrated remarkable accuracy and dependability during the trials at the Pokhran field range in Rajasthan, eliminating all assigned targets at both maximum and minimum range limitations. "Field evaluation trials of indigenously-developed Nag Mk 2, the third-generation anti-tank fire-and-forget guided missile, were successfully conducted recently at Pokhran field range in the presence of senior officers of the Indian Army," the ministry said in an official statement. "During the three field trials, the missile system destroyed precisely all the targets -- maximum and minimum range, thus validating its firing range," it added.
The Nag Mark 2 missile, created by the DRDO, is intended to eliminate contemporary armoured threats. Even in challenging combat situations, its fire-and-forget technology allows operators to lock onto targets before launch, guaranteeing accurate attacks. The ministry stated that the successful field evaluations of the Nag Missile Carrier (NAMICA) Version 2 in addition to the missile trials were a crucial step in operationalising the entire armament system. The achievement highlighted India's improving skills in anti-tank warfare and boosted the preparedness of its defence forces.
Rajnath Singh, defence minister, commended the DRDO, the Army, and industry participants for their contributions to reaching the milestone. "The successful trials of the Nag Mk 2 reaffirm India's commitment to achieving self-reliance in defence manufacturing," he stated. In praising the involved teams, Dr Samir V. Kamat, Secretary of Defence R&D and Chairman of the DRDO, stated, "This achievement underscores the synergy between DRDO, the Indian Army, and the defence industry in advancing India’s Indigenous defence capabilities."
The Nag Mark 2 features third-generation fire-and-forget technology, enabling precision targeting with minimal operator intervention post-launch. It offers versatile performance, capable of neutralising modern armoured vehicles equipped with Explosive Reactive Armour (ERA). Additionally, it is successfully integrated with NAMICA, enhancing battlefield mobility and deployment flexibility. The Nag Mark 2, which meets crucial operational requirements in anti-tank warfare, is an essential addition to India's defence arsenal. Its introduction is anticipated to improve the Indian Army's capacity to combat changing armour threats, especially on the country's borders.
The successful missile test showcased India's progress in becoming self-reliant through the 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' initiative. By cutting down reliance on imported defence systems, the country is steadily boosting its own research and development abilities.
