Travel for visitors from third countries to India via the Gaddachauki border transit point in Kanchanpur District, Sudurpaschim Province, has recently become more accessible. Previously, foreign tourists could enter Nepal through this border but were not permitted to return through it.
In a significant development, a meeting between Nepal's Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak and Indian Ambassador Naveen Srivastava led to discussions about lifting restrictions on immigration services for third-country citizens entering India through Nepali checkpoints. These restrictions have been in place since December 10, 2021, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Stakeholders in the tourism business of Kanchanpur district have been urging the government for three years to allow foreign tourists to enter India via the Gaddachauki transit point without hindrance. The previous policy allowed tourists to exit India through this checkpoint but not enter, discouraging tourists visiting Uttarakhand from extending their trips to Nepal.
Uttarakhand, neighbouring Gaddachauki, is a popular destination with attractions such as Badrinath, Kedarnath, Nainital, Ranikhet, Bhimtal and Mussoorie. The relaxation of these restrictions is expected to significantly benefit tourism, as it will enable tourists visiting these sites to also explore western Nepal, including Khaptad National Park, Shuklaphanta National Park, Badimalika Temple, Ugratara Temple, Shaileshwori, Dolpa, Mugu and Humla.
The decision to allow entry through the Gaddachauki checkpoint, in addition to the Bhairahawa border crossing in Lumbini Province, is poised to enhance the tourism experience for foreign visitors, facilitating easier and more comprehensive travel between Nepal and India.
This development marks a significant step towards boosting regional tourism and strengthening ties between the two neighbouring countries.
