External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met with his counterparts from the G4 countries, reaffirming their commitment to quickly reforming the United Nations Security Council through negotiations based on written proposals. The G4 nations include Brazil, Germany, India, and Japan. On an official visit to the US, Jaishankar met Brazil's Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira, Germany's Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock, and his Japanese counterpart Yoko Kamikawa on the sidelines of the 79th Session of the UN General Assembly on Monday.
Taking to social media platform X, S Jaishankar wrote, “Glad to join the traditional #G4 Foreign Ministers Meeting along with colleagues @ABaerbock, @Kamikawa_Yoko and Mauro Vieira in New York today. G4 reaffirmed its commitment for an urgent reform of the United Nations Security Council through Text Based Negotiations.”
Each other's bids for permanent seats on the UN Security Council are supported by the G4 countries. India has been leading the charge for years to reform the Security Council, arguing that the fifteen-nation body, established in 1945, is out of date and does not adequately represent the geopolitical landscape of the modern era. With members of the Security Council sharply divided on issues like the war in Ukraine and the conflict between Israel and Hamas, the polarized body has also failed to address contemporary peace and security concerns.
Jaishankar also discussed energy and economic cooperation, among other topics, with his counterpart Yvan Gil from Venezuela on Monday. "Pleased to meet FM @yvangil of Venezuela today on the sidelines of #UNGA79. Discussed energy, health and economic cooperation, as also reformed multilateralism," Jaishankar wrote in a post on X.
