In a remarkable achievement, From Shiva to Schrödinger by Dr. Mrittunjoy Guha Majumdar has risen to the #1 spot in the Physics category on Amazon India. This groundbreaking book has captivated readers across India, blending ancient Indic wisdom with modern quantum physics in an accessible and engaging way. Authored by Dr. Guha Majumdar, a physicist trained at Cambridge and Harvard, From Shiva to Schrödinger explores the profound connections between Kashmir’s Trika Shaivism and quantum physics.
The book offers fresh perspectives on non-duality, interconnectedness, and the illusion of separation, drawing parallels between the mystical teachings of ancient India and cutting-edge quantum phenomena like entanglement, superposition, and the observer effect. Since its launch, the book has garnered widespread acclaim for its clarity, depth, and unique approach. What sets From Shiva to Schrödinger apart is its focus on Trika Shaivism, a non-dualistic philosophy from Kashmir, rather than a broad exploration of Eastern mysticism.
By weaving the teachings of thinkers like Abhinavgupta, Utpaladeva, Kshemaraja, Vasugupta and Lal Ded with quantum physics, the book brings readers a fascinating synthesis of ancient wisdom and modern science. “We are thrilled to see the overwhelming response to From Shiva to Schrödinger,” said Dr. Guha Majumdar.
“I have always sought to systematically reconnect with Bharat’s civilisational roots and inspire readers to explore the deep connections between spirituality and science. Seeing the book resonate with so many people is truly humbling. This book is a prayer to the wonders of nature, which seems to be knitted with correlative creativity, a symphony of synergies, a flux of fluctuations, where we are creators and creations, emerging from an oft-paradoxical fundamental premise.”
The book also highlights Dr. Guha Majumdar’s own research on correlative reality, emergence, and fluctuations in the universe—work which was mentioned at this year’s Lindau Nobel Laureate Conference. These insights further enrich the narrative, making it a valuable resource for both physicists and spiritual seekers.
Rediscovering Kashmir’s Intellectual Legacy: In addition to its scientific value, From Shiva to Schrödinger shines a light on the rich intellectual heritage of Kashmir. It introduces readers to the multifacetedness and sheer brilliance of ancient Kashmiri thinkers like Somananda and Alakshyeshvari (Devi Roop Bhawani), while celebrating the valleys of Kashmir as an epicentre of Vedic wisdom, as the land of Rishi Kashyapa.
By examining the mysticism of the Shiva Sutras alongside quantum physics, the book provides profound insights into the nature of reality and the universe. It also emphasises the importance of nuanced exploration, cautioning against oversimplified connections between spiritual and scientific thought. The paradoxical ways of Trika Shaiva thought, as particularly expounded by Abhinavgupta as the 'interplay of opposites', has an interesting resonance with conceptual elements of quantum metaphysics.
Why Luminaries and Readers Love It : Prof. Anand Ranganathan, Professor at JNU and renowned public speaker, has called the book 'a tour de force that redefines how we see the world...a powerful manifesto for India's intellectual decolonisation by reclaiming the intersection of science and spirituality'.
Swami Sarvasthananda Maharaj, Monastic Representative of the Ramakrishna Mission to UNESCO, calls it 'a celebration of the unity between science and spirituality through the lens of a Sadhaka scientist'.
Prof. Sisir Roy, Senior Homi Bhabha Fellow at NIAS Bengaluru, has called it 'a transformative tapestry on how ours is a participatory universe'. Readers on Amazon have praised the book for its unique approach and engaging writing style.
One reviewer wrote, “A masterful blend of ancient Indian philosophy and modern physics that is both enlightening and thought-provoking.” Another noted, “This book is a treasure for anyone curious about the intersections of spirituality and science.” As the #1 best seller in its category, From Shiva to Schrödinger is inspiring a new generation of learners and sparking conversations about the dynamic interconnectedness of all things.
About the Author Dr. Mrittunjoy Guha Majumdar is a quantum physicist, who did his doctorate at the renowned Cavendish Laboratory at the University of Cambridge, before going on to pursue his postdoctoral stints at Harvard University, Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR).
Known for his groundbreaking research and eloquent writing, he has dedicated his career to not only undertaking meaningful work in quantum entanglement and quantum information (such as when he was a lead speaker in quantum error correction at the National Quantum Mission strategic consultation meeting in July 2023), but also towards exploring the intersections of science, philosophy and spirituality - most recently as an academic convenor of the Chaturtha Vishwa Veda Vijnana Sammelanam (World Vedic Science Congress) organised by the IKS Division - Ministry of Education and Vijnana Bharati.
