Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday stated that Assam has undergone a major transformation over the past decade, moving away from a long period of violence and instability towards peace and development. Addressing BJP booth-level workers in poll-bound Assam under the ‘Mera Booth, Sabse Mazboot Samvaad’ initiative, he said the state had once faced serious unrest but now reflects growing confidence due to sustained efforts by the current government.
He emphasised that earlier decades were marked by conflict and uncertainty, which affected the lives of people, especially the youth. Highlighting the change, he said, "We have seen the era when Assam was burning in violence. Assam saw a long span of instability, but things have changed in the past decade. But today, we can see a new confidence as the BJP's double-engine government has made every effort for peace."
The Prime Minister pointed out that the government has signed twelve peace agreements with different organisations in the Northeast, which played a key role in restoring stability. These agreements were not limited to announcements but were actively implemented on the ground, contributing to a more secure environment. He stressed that these efforts were aimed at ensuring a better future for the people and bringing long-term peace to the region.
Modi also criticised previous Congress governments, accusing them of failing to bring real change in Assam. He said earlier agreements were often made only for publicity and did not result in actual improvements. According to him, these agreements remained on paper and misled the public instead of solving problems.
Continuing his criticism, he said that under Congress rule, no agreement with insurgent groups or student organisations was successful. He added that the youth of Assam were left neglected, which pushed many towards unrest and instability. He further stated, "No agreement with insurgents and student organisations worked during the Congress rule in Assam. The Congress betrayed the Bodo cause."
In contrast, Modi highlighted the BJP government’s approach, saying it focused on honest implementation and long-term solutions. He said the current administration worked to bring those involved in violence into the mainstream and ensured that agreements translated into real benefits for people. He added that peace is essential for development and that the government has prioritised stability to improve opportunities for the youth.
The Prime Minister also urged party workers to connect with people and remind them of the changes that have taken place over the years. He asked them to highlight the difference between past governance and the present situation, especially in terms of peace and development. The outreach programme was aimed at strengthening grassroots communication ahead of the elections.
He concluded by expressing confidence in the BJP-NDA government’s performance and said that party workers are actively working towards securing another term in the state. He emphasised that continued efforts are needed to maintain peace and ensure further development in Assam.
