As per reports, fresh violence erupted in the city of Gurugram, following clashes between two groups during a religious procession in the Nuh district, where five people, including two police personnel, lost their lives. The mob of nearly 200 individuals, riding motorbikes and SUVs, went on a rampage in Badshahpur, situated about 40 kilometers away from Nuh.
According to reports, the mob targeted the main market in Badshahpur, vandalizing at least a dozen shops, including restaurants, meat shops, and roadside food stalls. Subsequently, four shops were set ablaze in Sector 66. Fortunately, no injuries were reported in the incident. The prompt response of a fire brigade team managed to control the fires and prevent further damage.
Meanwhile, in response to the violence, authorities took swift action, and the Badshahpur market was closed down, as confirmed by the police. The situation remains tense in the region as authorities work to bring the situation under control and investigate the underlying causes of the clashes and subsequent unrest.
However, Gurugram deputy commissioner Nishant Yadav described the situation as “normal,” and told ANI, “There was some spill-over impact in Sohna of whatever happened in Nuh, the situation was brought under control by evening.”
He added, "Sohna was our main focus area, peace committee meeting has taken place there, normalcy restored and markets have opened. We have conducted a flag march as well...in Gurugram one death was reported in Sector 57 mosque, 5 vehicles were torched in Sohna and 2-3 shops were vandalised."
According to officials, upon the arrival of the police at the scene of the reported violence, several rioters managed to escape on motorcycles and other vehicles. Nevertheless, the authorities have successfully detained some of the suspects. Additionally, the police have denied the reports suggesting that some shanties were set on fire along Kadarpur road.
Recent violence prompted the closure of schools and colleges in Sohna, Gurugram. The District Magistrate's office cites "communal tension in the neighbouring district of Nuh" and potential disruptions to peace and public order as reasons for the closure.
Officials in Gurugram prohibited the sale of loose petrol and diesel due to ongoing communal tensions. Clashes in Nuh district resulted in five deaths and injuries to over 70 people. The clashes were triggered after people pelted stones at a peaceful religious procession organized by Vishwa Hindu Parishad. Haryana Chief Minister assured strict action. As of now over 70 arrests were made and 44 FIRs registered.
