France has decided to send anti-drone and anti-missile defence systems to Cyprus after drones attacked a British military base on the island, the Cyprus News Agency reported on Tuesday.
According to the report, France will also send a frigate to help strengthen Cyprus’s defence. French President Emmanuel Macron told Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides about this plan on Tuesday morning. A Cypriot government source confirmed the report to the news agency, CNA.
This French assistance follows similar help offered by Greece after the British base was hit by drones earlier on Monday.
The report said that in the first incident, an Iranian-made Shahed drone crashed into the runway of the Royal Air Force’s Akrotiri base, causing limited damage. Hours later, two more drones were intercepted before they could reach the base.
Greece had already sent four F-16 fighter jets to Cyprus. Two Greek naval ships, one equipped with an anti-drone Centauros jamming system, were also on their way to help. The Centauros system has been used successfully before to detect and disrupt low-flying drones, like those targeting shipping near Yemen.
The Cyprus News Agency did not say exactly when the French systems or the frigate would arrive.
Neither the French nor the Cypriot government gave additional details beyond what was reported by CNA.
The British military base at RAF Akrotiri is a key site used by the United Kingdom in the region. On Monday, the first drone crash on its runway marked a serious security event, and the interception of two other drones showed rising tensions.
The reported French deployment adds to the support coming from regional allies in response to the threats posed by unmanned aerial drones.
