France's Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot has urged the European Commission to initiate more decisive measures against American billionaire Elon Musk, particularly concerning his role in managing X (formerly Twitter) as per Reuters report.
"Either the European Commission vigorously enforces the laws that exist to protect our unique space, or it does not." In that situation, it should consider restoring the ability to do so to EU member states," he added.
Just one day earlier, on January 6, French President Emmanuel Macron alleged Musk of meddling with European politics. Macron avoided mentioning Musk by name during his speech to French diplomats.
Still, it stated, "Who would have imagined 10 years ago that the owner of one of the largest social networks, information reference Elon Musk, would have been the owner of the social network X (formerly Twitter) since October 2022? The world would support a new international reactionary movement and directly interfere in elections, particularly in Germany."
Earlier, Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre expressed alarm about Musk's influence in other nations' affairs. Musk, a close acquaintance of US President-elect Donald Trump, has been appointed the director of the new Department of Government Efficiency and the Pentagon's head for Fox News. Musk's appointment as the director of the Department of Government Efficiency and as the Pentagon's presenter on Fox News prompted him to criticise lawmakers publicly. He has previously called for fresh elections in the UK and backed the Eurosceptic group Reform UK, asking for the resignation of its leader, Nigel Farage.
Musk has shown his support to the German far-right and pro-Russian Alternative for Germany (AfD) party. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz additionally shared his alarm about this as Germany prepares to conduct quick elections in February.
According to Politico, the European Commission is obligated to respond to Elon Musk's actions, which include promoting the views of politicians through social media platform X. It ensures adherence with the European Digital Services Act, which governs social network operations.
On January 9, Musk will be livestream on X alongside Alice Weidel, the leader of AfD. Because X is a famous and tremendous social network, these everyday live streams and a consistent presence on X may provide the AfD with a benefit over rival parties in the next German elections. European leaders have urged the European Commission to take immediate action.
Elon Musk has turned into a strong supporter of Donald Trump, even making donations to his political campaign. Elon Musk invested over $250 million to support Trump in the US election. Musk has gained Trump's proximity for his assistance. He currently spends a lot of his free time at the president-elect's Florida resort, Mar-a-Lago, dictating staff choices and exploring ways to reduce federal government expenditures.
