In a tragic incident on Wednesday, at least four individuals lost their lives and fourteen others sustained injuries in a terror attack at the headquarters of Turkish Aerospace Industries (TUSAS) near Ankara. Witnesses reported hearing explosions and gunfire as assailants, armed with assault rifles, infiltrated the facility. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, currently attending the BRICS Summit in Kazan, Russia, condemned the attack, emphasising the need for resilience against such acts of violence. Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya confirmed that two of the attackers have been neutralised.

Security footage aired by local media showed a group of assailants arriving at the TUSAS complex in a taxi, coinciding with a shift change among security personnel. According to a report by the Associated Press, at least one attacker detonated a bomb, which triggered chaos and allowed the gunmen—one of whom was a woman—to breach the facility. Private NTV television reported that personnel inside the complex may have been taken hostage during the attack.

The exact cause and nature of the attack remain under investigation, though some media reports have speculated that a suicide bombing may have been involved. Emergency services, including security forces, ambulances, and firefighters, were swiftly deployed to the scene, as reported by state-owned Anadolu Agency.

TUSAS, a state-run enterprise, plays a crucial role in Turkey's defense industry, manufacturing both civilian and military aircraft, unmanned aerial vehicles, and space systems. Among its significant projects is the KAAN, Turkey's first national combat aircraft. Due to its strategic importance, the company has previously been targeted by various militant groups, including Kurdish militants, Islamic State affiliates, and leftist extremists. However, no group has claimed responsibility for Wednesday’s attack. NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organisation) condemned the assault on Turkey, affirming its commitment to closely monitor the situation.

"Deeply concerning reports of dead and wounded in Ankara. NATO stands with our Ally Turkey. We strongly condemn terrorism in all its forms and are monitoring developments closely," Mark Rutte, head of the military alliance, said on X.
